A Broad Spectrum

Autism Spectrum Condition – ASC for short – is a broad spectrum of traits. These vary widely in presentation, with strengths and challenges. ASC affects communication, interaction and perception. The main aspects of ASC that you need to be able to identify are as follows:

Communication Difficulties:

  • Verbal and non-verbal challenges.
  • Misunderstandings and social anxiety.

Patterns of Behaviour:

  • Repetitive movements, routines, and interests.
  • Provides comfort but may hinder adaptation to change.

Sensory Sensitivities:

  • Heightened sensitivity to sensory inputs.
  • Sensory overload and discomfort.

Hyperfixation and Interests:

  • Intense interests in specific subjects.
  • Can be a source of joy but also a challenge.

Masking:

  • Concealing autistic traits to fit in.
  • Exhausting and may lead to mental health issues.
